Hammer and Chisel: 4 Greatest Sculptors and Their Sculptures
When two-dimensional art isn’t enough to satisfy your artistic desire, you go for 3-D. These amazing artist have mastered the art of sculpting and are known as the greatest of all-time. 1. Donatello Born in Florence, and was famous in Italy, Donatello had complete mastery of bronze, stone, wood, terra cotta, and pretty much anything you can chip using a hammer and chisel. His art focused on relief sculpture, nudes, equestrian statues. He was unquestionably the greatest sculptor of the early renaissance. He reinvented the art of sculpting. David (1440) and Equestrian statue of Gattamelata (1453) were some of his best artwork.

2. Michelangelo A sculptor first, painter and architect second, Michelangelo’s influence dominated the European art. He believes in the human form as the ultimate expression of human spirituality, sensibility, and beauty. He has created a great number of human sculptures expressing the full range of human emotion. His so inventive, he never repeated a pose. His most famous works were Pietà (1499), David (1504), and Moses (1515) 3. Gian Lorenzo Bernini Bernini is known for his work of carving marbles as to make it seem like they’re moving or have the delicacy of the finest lace. He blends, sculpture, architecture, and painting into an extravagant theatrical ensemble. Apollo and Daphne (1625), Ecstasy of Saint Teresa (1652), and The Rape of Proserpina (1622) were some of his most famous works.

4. Auguste Rodin They say Rodin is up there with Michelangelo in terms of sculpting greatness. They’re different though – Michelangelo carved into marble whereas Rodin molded with clay. His work in clay made him internationally famous. He loved the fluidity of clay and plaster. His most famous works were The Thinker (1902), Gates of Hell (1917), and The Walking Man (1878) Jonathan Schrag here. I am an art student from BYU.
